In the Summer 2000, we made a visit to Blennerhassett (an island near Parkersburg, West Virginia).  This was the site of a colonial house/plantation.  The house has been rebuilt (only about the foundation is original) and is filled with antique furniture.  You can also take a horse drawn "bus" tour to other parts of the island.  You have to take a ferry to get to the island so you're also dependent on it to get back off.  There are pre-set times and they end sometime around 5:00 PM or so.  Plan on spending a couple of hours.  We made the mistake of visiting during some festival (in Parkersburg) that put a carnival in the middle of the parking area.  There was nowhere to park at all.  We probably had to walk at least a mile to get to the parking lot that you'd normally use for the ferry.
