In July 2000, we made a visit to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The
closest thing we can compare it with is Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.
It is located where the Shenandoah River enters the Potomac River and within an
hour's drive of Washington, DC. There are many shops but they close around
5:00, so don't visit too late in the day. Make sure to walk up the long
hand-carved stone stairway to the old churches and Jefferson's Rock (where
Thomas Jefferson visited).
