LAURA: | On March 25, 2001, we made a brief visit to Hungry Mother
State Park near Marion, Virginia. A little chilly but fairly deserted. For an article about the park's history and name, click HERE. Click HERE for the official park web site or HERE for the town's site. Click HERE for a topo map. Click on any photo for a larger view. Be Sure to Check Our Panoramas! The 2200-acre park has a 108-acre lake with a beach area for swimming. Row boats and paddle boats are available, too. There are cook-out shelters, horseback riding and cabins. Don't forget the eight miles of hiking trails! If you visit during the third weekend in July, you can see the Hungry Mother Arts and Crafts Festival. Nearby is Mount Rogers National Recreation Area which is the highest point in Virginia. Most visitors will travel by Interstate 81. There will be an exit sign for the park at one of the Marion exits. Signs should lead you straight to the park, easily. It's just north of the town. |
