Stone Mountain Park, North Carolina
October 27, 2002

We drove part of the Blue Ridge Parkway and then took a side trip to Stone Mountain Park.  This is a large stone "dome" mountain.  Very unique and pretty.  We read on another website that there are nearly always deer wandering around.  This was definitely true when we went.  There were so many that we'd really suggest driving very slowly through the park.  They're everywhere!

We thought the signs directing visitors to the park could really stand improving.  We didn't see a single sign on our way south and drove several miles too far.  It didn't help that the town near the turn doesn't seem to have a sign, either.  On the way back north, we finally spotted a sign for the proper turn.  The actual park itself could stand to add some additional signs, too.  We walked a good distance and really didn't know if we were in the right place or not.  Finally, we spotted the homestead but still couldn't see the mountain.  Once we started across the "lawn" we spotted the gigantic rock.

The weather wasn't very good during our visit but it was still a great trip.  We arrived too late to make the hike to the top of the rock but plan to return someday.

Click HERE for a topo map.  Well, I think it's the right place.  North Carolina has several places named Stone Mountain.
